This year, Relay For Life will take place in nearly 5,100 communities in the United States and 20 other countries and will raise funds to support the Society’s mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and fighting back.

SMCC to Lead Volunteers in National MLK Day of Service, Jan. 16, 2012
South Mountain Community College students and staff will volunteer for the National MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the college’s 24th Street campus, 7050 S. 24th Street, Phoenix, Arizona. The project starts at 8:00 am., and community volunteers are welcome!

The National MLK Day of Service is the observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a day of volunteer service organized to meet community needs.  Instead of having another day off from school or work, the aim is to make the holiday a day “on,” in which individuals of all ages and backgrounds can come together to strengthen their community.

The goals for this project are to clean and re-paint numerous fixtures in and around the college, including painting racquetball courts, painting the softball dugouts, power washing the baseball dugout, repainting sections of the college’s parking lots, and installing new nets on the tennis courts.  Volunteers are encouraged to wear sneakers, with no open-toed shoes.

All volunteers will need to sign a release of liability form to participate.  Children under 18 who are not SMCC students must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

The event is free and lunch will be provided to volunteers.  To volunteer or get additional information, contact Buddy Cheeks at 602.243.8065 or e-mail smcc@smcmail.maricopa.edu.
