Both Christenson (Oklahoma State) and Ottoson (Arizona State) have also signed scholarships to play at Division 1 universities in the Fall of 2010. With the 2010 MLB Draft, this brings the total of professionally drafted players in the South Mountain baseball program to 33, under the current coaching staff in the last 7 years.

Cougar Golf Wins NJCAA National Championship

Goodyear, AZ---South Mountain Community College claimed it's second NJCAA Division II men's golf championship Friday, and the first title under 3rd-year coach Jake Harrington who graduated from SMCC while playing golf for the Cougars in 2002 where they finished 5th in the nation as a team at ironically the same golf course that would give him his first NJCAA title as a head coach.

The Cougars would open the tournament with a share of the lead after shooting 1-over par 289, with Darton College who won the National Championship in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Local rival Mesa Community College would end the day at 291 just 2 shots back of the lead. Davis Garner lead the Cougars in the opening round by posting a 1-under total of 71 while his fellow Sophomores, Trent Ka'ahanui and Branden Barron would post even par rounds of 72, and Freshman Nick Umholtz would card a round of 2-over 74.

In the second round Mesa Community College took the field by storm posting a 10-under round of 278 in the morning wave. The Cougars would fight the wind that came in the afternoon wave to post a 2-under par round of 286 which would put the Cougars 6 shots back of the Thunderbirds and Darton would post 292 to be 6 shots back of SMCC in 3rd place. Garner would continue to lead the Cougars with another under par round of 70 while Umholtz, Barron, and Burgess would card rounds of 72 to round out the team total.

Trailing Mesa at the halfway point was familiar territory for the Cougars as they trailed Mesa by 13 shots at the halfway point of Regional's just two weeks earlier, before rallying back to win the Region Championship by 13 shots. Coach Harrington when asked if he was worried about the team's position after round two responded, "I actually think it is a great spot for us to be in. We have played against Mesa all year and we know what they are capable of and I think with Mesa coming out as strong as they did in the second round they actually demoralized a large portion of the field behind us. I just reminded my guys about what we did in regional's and told them that we cannot win the tournament in the first two days but our goal was to put ourselves in a position to make a move and win the tournament going into the weekend and we have put ourselves in that position."

In the third round, the Cougars who were paired with Mesa and Darton would make their move by posting another round of 2-under par 286 and jumping out to a 4 shot lead over Mesa Community College who posted a round of 296, a 6 shot lead on Darton who posted a round of 288, and a 24 shot lead on defending champions John A. Logan College. Davis Garner would continue his leadership role for the Cougars by posting his 3rd consecutive under par round by shooting 3-under 69, Umholtz and Barron would card even par rounds of 72 for the second straight day, and Ka'ahanui shot 73.

Palm Valley would grit its teeth with a combination of wind and tough pin positions in the final round as South Mountain, Mesa, and Darton, would fight through the worst of conditions being in the leader group. The defending national champions John A. Logan, with great closing power in 4th place, would do their best to fight back into contention in an earlier wave of teams carding a final round of 291. However, the low round of the day would not be enough to catch South Mountain Community College who had built a 24 shot lead over John A. Logan entering the final round. The Cougars would shoot a round of 305, which would be the best round of the leader group and give the Cougars their second national championship in school history and first under third year coach and former South Mountain Community College alumnus Jake Harrington. Garner would remain the low individual for the Cougars and finish as the National Runner-Up after rattling the flagstick on his final chip at 18, which would have put him in a tie with Marcelo Roza at 4-under par for Medalist honors.

The Cougars would leave Palm Valley with four All-Americans, having Davis Garner and Branden Barron finishing as 1st Team All-American's, Trent Ka'ahanui finishing as a 2nd Team All-American, and Nick Umholtz finishing as an Honorable Mention All-American.

"Winning the National Championship has been a dream of mine ever since I started coaching three years ago for South Mountain. It was a long summer for me after we finished in 3rd place at nationals last year after we had a 1-shot lead going into the final round. I believe I had the team too fired up going into the final round at nationals last year so I did the opposite this year and just told the team to go out there and enjoy the moment, because if we play the course one shot at a time and don't worry about anybody else nobody can beat us!"

Back to Back NJCAA Region I Champions

Goodyear, AZ--- The SMCC men's golf team, under direction of 3rd-year coach Jake Harrington will be making their second straight trip to the NJCAA Division II National Championship after claiming back-to-back NJCAA Region I Championships this past week at Palm Valley Golf Club

The conditions at Palm Valley were some of the windiest and toughest conditions the Cougars had faced all year, with winds blowing for two days at over 50 mph and the other two days seeming calm in comparison with gusts between 15-20 mph.

After round 1 of the region tournament the Cougars found themselves in a big hole after carding their highest team total of the year at 318, 30-over par and 12-shots behind rival Mesa Community College. Davis Garner and Jordan Burgess lead the way for the Cougars with rounds of 78 and teammates Trent Ka'ahanui and Nick Umholtz carding rounds of 81, the team needed to come out strong the next day in order to stay in the tournament.

Round 2 found the Cougars battling back with a team total of 1-under 287, however, they would drop another stroke to MCC after the Thunderbirds would stay hot and shoot a round of 2-under 286 to give themselves a 13-stroke lead over the defending region champion Cougars. Garner bounced back in round 2 with a 4-under par 68, while Burgess, Umholtz, and Barron shot rounds of 73.

Moving day would be round 3 were the Cougars, and they came out swinging back as they would fight tough conditions to shoot a round of 2-over par 290, which was 11-strokes better then the Thunderbirds who would card a round of 13-over par 301. Garner continued his great play with another under par round of 70, Burgess fired 1-under 71, Ka'ahanui shot 73, and Umholtz would shoot 76.

The final day would find the Cougars only 2 shots back of the lead, and the Thunderbirds looking over their shoulders as the winds would once again pick up with probably the strongest wind of the tournament. Garner would lead the Cougars with another under par round of 71, Ka'ahanui and Barron would help out with rounds of 74, and Umholtz would shoot a round of 80 giving the Cougars a final round total of 299 which would blow the competition away with the Thunderbirds firing a final round of 314 and turning what was once a 13-stroke deficit halfway thru the tournament into a 13-stroke victory.

All five of the Cougars would finish on the All-Region team with Sophomore Davis Garner being the only player in the field to shoot under par for the tournament and winning the NJCAA Region I medalist honors at 1-under par 287.

The Cougars and the Thunderbirds will play in the 2010 NJCAA Division II National Championship May 18-21, 2010 at Palm Valley Golf Club.

Cougar Volleyball Coach Pat Mooney states, "I think she's going to make a great addition to the team".  He feels Dominique has tremendous upside and after preseason workouts thinks she'll progress into a formidable option for South in the middle. During a tryout Coach Mooney assed Dominique's skill set, offered her some suggestions and she was able to adjust within 2-3 reps. He remarked, "Coaches are always looking for athletes who are coachable as well as athletic, so I'm quite happy Coach Sawyer enlightened me about Dominique!"

In her second season at Mountain View High School in 2010, Kioa ranked second on the team in scoring (8.4 ppg), second in blocked shots (13) and second in steals (36) for the Toros.  Kioa was named the team's top defender during the '09 & '10 season. Last Saturday (May 8), the SMCC Cougar softball team started in the winner's bracket of the Region 1 playoffs against Glendale Community College. Trailing 2-1 in the last inning, SMCC was down to our last strike (two outs with a 3-2 count) when freshman Brittany Johnson singled home freshman Ariel Siegel with the tying run. Moments later, South Mountain scored the go-ahead run, 3-2. In the bottom of the last inning, the Gauchos went down 1-2-3.

Then, in the Region 1 championship game against #1 seed Mesa Community College, the Cougars jumped to an early 8-0 lead. Unfortunately, Mesa roared back, scoring five unanswered runs. With runners on first and second, the tying run came to the plate. Freshman Aklexis Villegas struck her out looking!

South Mountain drops series to Central Arizona to end season

South Mountain fell 8-4 and 13-5 to the Vaqueros in the ACCAC Division 1 Playoffs. The Central Arizona offense proved to be too much for the Cougars on the weekend. In each game of the series the Cougars allowed a big inning, a four run sixth in game one and a seven run second inning in game two. In game one, freshman Michael Englund led the offense with two hits, and sophomore Shaun Deisler had two hits in game two. The Cougars finished the season with a record of 38-19 overall and 26-12 in the ACCAC.

South Mountain clinches #3 seed in ACCAC playoffs

Sophomores Kyle Ottoson and Ryan Christenson combined to throw a one-hitter, striking out 11 batters, to lead the Cougars to a 2-1 win in the first game of the series with Cochise College. Both Cougar runs were scored after lead-off triples by freshman Trey Ford and Justin Rosales. The win clinched the 3 seed in the ACCAC Division 1 playoffs for the Cougars and locked Cochise into the 4 seed.

Without much on the line, the Cougars took a 6-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning against Cochise. The Cougars bullpen faltered allowing Cochise to score four times in the inning. The two teams battled four more innings until the 13th inning when the Apaches pushed across a run to earn a split in the series. In the second game, the offense was led by freshman Ryan Klem's three hits.

The ACCAC playoffs will start next week with the #3 Cougars at #2 Central Arizona May 6-8th.

Cougars swept by Roughriders in Prescott

In the first game of the series, Yavapai got out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings of play. South Mountain answered back with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth, on a two-run home run from freshman Trey Ford. In the top of the fifth, the Cougars tied the game on an RBI single from sophomore Shaun Deisler. Yavapai added a home run in the bottom half of the fifth inning and used solid relief pitching to hold on for a 5-4 win over the Cougars.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Cougars utilized their bullpen for the entire game, without much success. Yavapai jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back, for the 21-5 victory and a sweep of South Mountain. Freshman Justin Rosales and sophomore Landon Joost each had two hits in the game for the Cougars.

The final regular season series will be on Saturday May 1st, when the Cougars host the 4th place Cochise Apaches for a 12pm double-header.

Baseball uses outburst in 9th inning to sweep Eastern Arizona

South Mountain sent sophomore Kyle Ottoson to the mound for the first game of the series. Ottoson threw six innings, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out 13 batters. Freshmen Justin Rosales and Ryan Klem each had two hits to lead the offense. In the 6th inning, Klem hit his second home run of the season to give the Cougars the 6-2 lead and cap off the scoring in the victory.

The second game of the series featured a pitching duel between the Cougars Joseph Lopez and Eastern's Jesus Carlos. The Cougars managed a fifth inning run on a triple from freshman Shane Blair and sacrifice fly from Rosales. This was the only scoring in the game until the Cougars erupted for nine runs in the top of the ninth inning, led by two RBI hits from freshman Trey Ford. Joseph Lopez picked up his 8th win of the season by allowing just three hits and striking out 10 batters in the 10-0 victory.

Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Prescott to take on Yavapai College on Tuesday April 27th at 12pm.
